Dear Astronomy/Physics Department Faculty or Staff:

We're trying to reach as many undergraduate students who would be
interested in knowing about our NSF-REU Summer Intern Program as
possible.  Could I please ask that you forward this to the undergraduate
students in your department?  And if this has reached the wrong
person, my apologies, but I would be gratful if you'd help me update
my distribution list by replying with the email address that your
department would like to receive annoucements in future years.  Thank
you very much for your time.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Undergraduate Student:

The Southeastern Association for Research in Astronomy expects to host a
"Research Experiences for Undergraduates" program sponsored by the
National Science Foundation in the summer of 2012. Each SARA summer
intern will work closely with a faculty mentor at one of the 10 SARA
universities.  In addition to observing with the SARA 0.9-m telescope at
Kitt Peak in Arizona, the summer activities will include a number of
social events and excursions, as well as workshops on observational
techniques data reduction, current events in astronomy, proposal
writing, job opportunities in astronomy, and scientific ethics.
Participants will present research results at a final workshop near the
end of summer and the proceedings will be published in JSARA: The
Journal of the Souteastern Association for Research in Astronomy (see
www.jsara.org).

Stipend support for the program is $4500.  Housing is provided and
travel to and from the program is supported, as is an observing run at
Kitt Peak National Observatory.

Please visit our website at
                 www.astro.fit.edu/sara-reu
for more details and to complete an application.  The deadline for
receipt of all materials is February 3, 2012.  Appointments will
be announced beginning March 1, 2012.

The Southeastern Association for Research in Astronomy (SARA) is a
consortium of 10 universities primarily in the southeastern United
States, and students selected for the program may end up working at any
one of the 10 institutes:  The Florida Institute of Technology, East
Tennessee State University. , Florida International University, The
University of Georgia, Valdosta State University, Clemson University,
Ball State University, Agnes Scott College, University of Alabama, and
Valparaiso University.

Students who have completed their freshman, sophomore, or junior year
in college by Spring 2012 are invited to apply (graduating seniors and
more advanced students are not eligible).  Applicants are not requried
to be majors in Astronomy or Physics, though a demonstrated interest
is essential.  Applicants must be U.S. citizens or Permanent Residents in
good academic standing and are expected to have adequate preparation in
basic science and math courses.  If you have questions prior to applying
and after seeing the online documentation, please contact me.

Office of Graduate Studies

Dear Professor Kolagani:

I am writing to request your help in identifying undergraduate students who are interested in a summer research experience. Our faculty has been impressed with the quality of students at your institution and I hope you will encourage your students to consider applying to the 2012 Nebraska Summer Research Program

Nebraska's summer program offers research opportunities in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields. A complete listing of faculty mentors and research project descriptions can be found on our website at http://www.unl.edu/summerprogram/. Students can also find information about program benefits including a competitive stipend, room and board, travel expenses and more.

Summer 2012 programs include:

During the Nebraska Summer Research Program, students receive first-hand exposure to research and the experiences of graduate school. They work closely with faculty mentors and research teams of graduate students and other summer scholars. Students also have opportunities to participate in meaningful social and professional development activities outside of the laboratory.

Our online application makes it easy for students to apply. Priority review begins Wednesday, February 15 and all applications are due Monday, March 1. Students historically underrepresented in graduate education and students from academic institutions where research programs are limited are especially encouraged to apply.

Please feel free to forward this to your students or to download our flyer to post. If you or your students have questions, please feel free to contact me directly.

Sincerely,
Justina Clark

Subject: Award for Jeff Klupt

Hey all!

Hope everyone is enjoying some time off.

Our much-beloved and knowledgeable Jeff Klupt is being nominated for the University System of Maryland Regent's Award for Outstanding Staff; an honor that he most certainly has earned many times over. Dr. Kolagani has asked me to help with getting student recommendations to act as supporting documents for the nomination.

We are looking for some thoughts or reflections you have of Jeff. A formal letter is not needed; merely a brief paragraph. If you are in need of things to write about, you might consider research projects that he may have helped you with, lab equipment he fixed, or advice he may have given you. Be sure to include your name and current affiliation at the bottom of the paragraph.  You can send these kind words back to this email or to my email address (mdevan2@students.towson.edu).  Please be aware that the nomination is due on January 10th, so we will need all the materials in by January 9th.

Thanks in advance.

Have a happy New Year's and enjoy the rest of the break!

Spring Semester meeting times

Hey all,

The semester does not start for another 25 days and I'm sure many are not in the school mode, so I'm keeping this easy for you. We need to decide on a meeting time for next semester. Which works better?
                                                   Tuesday: 11 - 12  or after 4 pm.
                                                                     or
                                                   Friday: ~10 - 11

Please email your choice to this address.

Also, brief statements in support of Jeff Klupt's nomination for the University System of Maryland Outstanding Staff Award are still being accepted. A brief paragraph with your name and current affiliation is all that's needed. Please submit these no later than the morning of January 9th to this address or my email mdevan2@students.towson.edu .

Hope everyone is enjoying the break.
