Graduate Programs and Career Advise

Hey everyone!

Hope your break is going well!

Here are just a couple of things you might think about before the start of next semester. The Graduate Programs at the University of Vermont and Northern Arizona University are looking for great graduate students like yourself. I have attached the pdfs below. If interested, take a look and make some contacts for your future.

If you are more into starting a career, the Career Center has several programs to help you land a great first job.

Senior Survey:  Please remind your graduating seniors to complete the TU Graduating Senior Survey.  Each soon-to-be graduate was emailed the link, but they can also access the survey directly at http://studentvoice.com/tu/gradseniors2013.  The results of the survey (including college-level data) will be made available a IR's website.

Job Search Boot Camp:  For December grads who are still looking for post-graduation employment, we encourage their participation in our Job Search Boot Camp on January 17th.  This half-day program aimed at new grads will give students everything they need to know about successfully finding a job (mock interviews with employers, resume reviews, LinkedIn profile photo, job search strategies, etc.).  More details can be found in students' Hire@TU accounts under the "Career Events" tab, as well as on our calendar of events athttp://www.towson.edu/careercenter/calendar.asp.

Career Center Satellite Hours:  I'm working on scheduling my Satellite Hours in Smith Hall for the spring semester (tentatively the second Tuesday of each month).   Once the schedule is finalized, I'll send details and flyers your way.

Spring Career Events:  Career events scheduled for Spring 2013 include the MCC Career Fair (2/15), Senior Conference (2/22) and Mega Job & Internship Fair (3/28).  Details on all these events will be available on our website's calendar as the dates approach:http://www.towson.edu/careercenter/calendar.asp.

Happy New Year!

From Dr. Simpson:

The University of Vermont's
Materials Science Graduate Program
http://www.uvm.edu/matsci
*********************************************************
Overview
The Materials Science Ph.D. and M.S.  programs have been active since 1981.   They are interdisciplinary programs spanning condensed matter physics, chemistry of materials, electrical, nano-mechanical, and bio-polymer engineering. We are particularly looking for students with a strong  foundation in fields such as Physics and Materials Science who are interested in pursuing basic research, including experimental, computational, and theoretical studies. Our recent alumni have been very successful, having pursued  postdoctoral positions at top research universities and national laboratories and  faculty positions in academia. Several have pursued careers in industry in sectors such as semiconductors, micro mechanical devices and polymers, including as president of a venture-capital funded MEMS startup company.
The 18 participating faculty are funded by DOE, NSF, NASA, and DOD.  Several are NSF CAREER awardees.  They frequently publish in high impact journals in Materials Science and related fields.

Application Deadline:
The application deadline for Fall 2013 is April 1, 2013.

From Dr. Ha:

M.S. program in Applied Physics at Northern Arizona University

Please forward this flyer on to your undergraduate students, and consider encouraging them to apply to our master's program in Applied Physics.  We have a fairly unique program in that we provide funding (as teaching assistants) for virtually all of our master's students. Recently we revamped our program, and we now emphasize skills rather than the standard graduate physics curriculum.  Our students have been successful both in finding jobs and in going on to Ph.D. programs. The faculty is very supportive of our students, and we are proud of our program and of the camaraderie that our department enjoys. If you have any questions about the program, please feel free to contact myself or the Graduate Coordinator, Dr. David Trilling (David.Trilling@nau.edu).

The flyers attached have some more information on them. If interested, please take a look and apply.

Happy Holidays!

DOE Scholars Program

Hey all,

Hope everyone had a great break and are ready to finish out the semester strong.

As we have mentioned several times, there is tremendous amount of opportunity for summer research available.  These programs can be found through the NSF, NASA, DOE, NNSA, and a host of other government agencies. Applications are coming due soon for the upcoming summer.

Though most programs are current students that will continue on for the Fall 2013 semester, there are a couple of opportunities for the current seniors like the DOE Scholars Program. A poster is up on the doors in the 4th Floor of Smith Hall and it is also attached.

This is an great opportunity for all students and the application is pretty easy. (I'm about 90% done and it took me a little over an hour.)

Dear David:

We are gearing up for our fall reminder to students and their mentors about applying to REUs or other summer research opportunities for next summer. As you may know, we contact several thousand students from our student directory (the majority of whom are underrepresented minority students) to remind them to apply. They can search for and contact programs and opportunities posted on our site, www.pathwaystoscience.org<http://www.pathwaystoscience.org>.

If you are not sure what programs we have listed, you can find our current listing of programs at your institution here:  http://www.pathwaystoscience.org/Institution.asp?sort=Institution&subsort=TowsonU

If you would like to update a program, click the "Click here to submit program updates<http://www.pathwaystoscience.org/programform.asp?sort=MAI-AcadiaNP-TeacherRanger>" link at bottom of program info page.

If you would like to post a new program that is not yet listed, you can fill out our online program form here: http://www.pathwaystoscience.org/programform.asp or send me your information in an email.

If you are not sure whether your program should be posted, first please read our posting criteria: http://www.pathwaystoscience.org/whatwepost.asp

If you are not offering your program this year or need to make other changes please feel free to let us know. Also, if you have other colleagues who are working with REUs please feel free to pass this along to them.

We will send out general announcements to faculty, staff and students as well as reminders to students to apply over the next few weeks before the holiday season. Soliciting your updates is the first step in that process.

Good evening,

This is just a quick note to let you know that, as in previous years, APS will be offering travel awards to students who are presenting at the APS March and April Meetings in Baltimore and Denver.

We will get more details on the awards up on the website shortly—however, students must have an abstract submitted to the meeting in order to be eligible for the award.  The deadline for Abstract submission to the APS March meeting is this Friday, November 9.  So if your students have not yet submitted their abstracts to the March Meeting, please encourage them to do so by Friday if they intend to apply for travel funding.

Also, if your students wish to have their presentations judged at the meeting, and receive feedback as well as a certificate recognizing their participation, they will need to submit their abstracts in Category 25.1 – SPS Undergraduate Research.

More details on the Future of Physics Days events at APS March and April will be made available soon.  In the meantime, if you have any further questions at this time, please don't hesitate to ask.

Best,

Crystal

Subject: Updates from recent SPS meetings

Hey everyone,

Hope you have been enjoying some much deserved time off and are ready to get back to work next week.  SPS will be rather busy for the remainder of the semester as it plans to attend and hold several events. Hopefully, all of you make plans to attend these events.

The coming events are:

The first and nearest event is the Science against Cancer Relay for Life that benefits the American Cancer Society. Teams camp overnight in the Towson Center and take turns walking around the indoor track to raise money and cancer awareness. Other STEM groups have asked us to attend this event recently and I'm sure some people are available to attend. I know many of us have or have had family and friends suffer from cancer. Anyone interested in going should either put their name on the SPS whiteboard or send me an email to mdevan2@students.towson.edu. A small donation is typically given, however if enough people would like to go, SPS will make a split the contribution with you. This event will take place April 20th at 7 PM at the Towson Center. Further information can be found at http://main.acsevents.org/site/TR?team_id=1070409&fr_id=41425&pg=team.

Also on April 20th, is a Physics day at Six Flags America in Laurel. SPS National is asking for volunteers for their varous demonstrations set up in the amusement park. Those that register to help out will receive a free t-shirt, lunch, and free afternoon rides at the park. Those interested in going should take a look at http://www.spsnational.org/programs/sixflags/ for more information.

The following weekend, April 28th and 29th, the SPS will be going to DC to attend the USA Science and Engineering Festival. This is huge gathering of scientific and engineering graduate programs and companies as well as national labs.  Almost every subsection of physics and science in general is represented here. Last year, the SPS went and a great time was had by all.  Hopefully everyone makes plans to attend this event as it could be where you land your next internship, job, or in at graduate school.  The event runs from 10 AM to 5 PM on Saturday April 28th. We will meet up at the top of the Union Garage at 8:30 AM and travel to DC together. There is also a session on Sunday April 29th, which we may or may not attend depending on interest. This is definitely a worthwhile event to attend; we hope that all of you plan on attending at least Saturday, April 28th.

Though no date has been determined yet, the SPS is planning on hosting a Science cafe sometime this semester. We are open to any and all help with this event. Jack Mitchum was generous enough to provide the names and contact info for several speakers. We are still in need of a hosting site, an appropriate date and most of all INTEREST!  We will advertise to all on Campus, but we will like to see members at this event, considering you guys will get the most out of this informal science discussion. More details will be announced as they are known.

And lastly, there has been mention that Hampton University will host this year's Zone 4 meeting. If this is confirmed to be true, then SPS will be attending. The information for this event will be given to us at late notice, so we do anticipate many will have made other plans for the weekend of the Zone 4 meeting.  However, as with the USA Science and Engineering Festival, this is an event you don't want to miss, especially if you are in need of an idea for a capstone project. Some of the research presented might spark your imagination.  More details will follow when they are known.
As always, regular meetings are held every other Tuesday at 11 AM in the SPS Lounge. The next meeting is Tuesday, March 27th at 11 AM. Plan on attending, especially if you have questions or concerns about upcoming events or if you would like to suggest another event.

Have a relaxing end to spring break and hope to see all of you at the meeting on Tuesday, March 27th at 11 AM.
